DoctorPrior to surgery you will meet with the physician and have an opportunity to ask him/her any last minute questions. The physician begins the procedure with a pelvic exam to determine the size, shape, and position of the uterus. Depending upon your preference, this is the time that the anesthesiologist will administer medication. A speculum is then placed inside the vagina to keep the vaginal walls apart and an antiseptic (Betadine) is used to clean the vagina. The opening of the cervix is then stretched with a series of progressively sized dilators. When the cervical opening is large enough, a small suction cannula is inserted to the uterus to remove the pregnancy. A spoon shaped instrument called a curette may be used to make sure the uterine cavity is completely empty. The surgical abortion usually last about 3-5 minutes.
