We offer a one day D&E procedure for patients up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. Prior to surgery, you will meet with the physician and have an opportunity to ask him/her any last minute questions. After all questions have been answered, the medication Cytotec is administered.

The physician begins the procedure with a pelvic exam to determine the size, shape, and position of the uterus. At this time the anesthesiologist will administer medication. The patient MUST be asleep for this procedure. A speculum is then placed inside the vagina to keep the vaginal walls apart and an antiseptic (Betadine) is used to clean the vagina. The opening of the cervix is then stretched with a series of progressively sized dilators. When the cervical opening is large enough, a suction cannula and surgical forceps are inserted into the uterus to remove the pregnancy. A spoon shaped instrument called a curette may be used to make sure the uterine cavity is completely empty. The second trimester abortion usually takes about 10-20 minutes.
